Ties on the Hill-side
I used to wear ties all the time while in college. Actually, I worked for a tie designer after school who paid me in ties. Needless to say, that ended within a short time. As much as I liked having a never-ending supply of ties, convincing AT&T to accept a handful for my monthly bill was not working out.
To make a long story short, I still like wearing ties, but have now found a new reason to start wearing them every day.
With a little time to kill one day recently, I was walking down Lafayette Street in NYC and went into the clothing shop In God We Trust (a really great little shop, by the way), and found a small display of ties and handkerchiefs from the Hill-side, a furnishings company based in Brooklyn, NY. All are made in New York City out of American and Japanese fabrics- 100% cotton selvedge chambray, waxed canvas, and twills.
The company’s first line only launched just this past Fall, but has already gained such word-of-mouth exposure to be placed in prestigious stores across the US, England and Japan. A testimony to the goods.
The ties wear really well. Very nicely riding the line between casual and polished. The fabric is light enough to allow for a nice knot and sturdy enough to look great all day even with a little rumpling. The handkerchief/bandanas are very cool as well, with their selvedge edges and easy chambray colors. Even if you’re not one to traditionally wear a handkerchief or bandana, believe me, you’ll find a creative way to tuck it into a pocket or something.
And as you can see in the photos below, you’ll need to pick up an extra piece or two or learn how to share yours with the gal in your life.
