AKG Acoustics Headphones
Founded in Vienna, Austria in 1947, AKG Acoustics has been quietly creating some of the world’s finest quality microphones and headphones, but known mostly by professionals in recording studios, radio stations, and theaters. Only in recent years have we laymen been treated to the wonderful rich clarity of their products.
Not being a singer of any kind (lucky you), my experience with AKG is limited to only their headphones, not their microphones. I’ve compulsively purchased new headphones over the years, looking for that perfect sound, but was never truly satisfied by what I’d found. And to make matters more difficult, the “perfect” sound is very personal. What one person is looking for in sound may not be the same as another- so asking for advice doesn’t always help.
After trying everything from Sony DJ quality headphones to Bose full-spectrum and noise canceling and everything in between, I finally and happily came to AKG.

I set aside a little personal time to try out the full AKG selection at Guitar Center and eventually settled on the #K272 model for it’s amazingly clear highs and full mid and low ranges (Quadrophenia never sounded so good!). Although the headphones are somewhat large, they are quite lightweight (only 240 gr) and very comfortable with their soft velvet earpads and suspension headband.
While I didn’t really find a bad pair among the assortment, I personally felt the #K272 best suited my needs (Rock to Jazz). I can go on and on about the sound quality, but in the end it’s all up to what you’re looking for in your experience.
Just wanted to share the findings from my obsessive headphone search – and with such variety in the headphone market, I would love to hear about your favorites too.
AKG K701: My second Choice (very cool look too)
Happy Listening.
