Zak Smith | Artist Snapshot
Sasha, Acrylic and metallic ink
Primarily known for his portraiture, Zak Smith’s abstract pattern work is what I find most fascinating about his paintings. Like the above portrait and the few others scattered through the below abstract pieces, he has a gift for successfully creating such complex pattern among detailed backgrounds and shadows. The pieces are so structured and planned, yet fluid and organic.

For a relatively young man, Mr. Smith has been a successful artist for quite a bit of his 34 years. Born in Syracuse, NY, schooled at Cooper Union, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale, he counts New York’s Fredericks and Freiser Gallery and London’s Saatchi Gallery among the many who represent his work.

Glad you like his work too. I’ll have to look up Mr. Jean- Thanks for the tip.
WOW. Very nice style, great Sasha portrait! One thing that strikes me in these are the fluid combinatiosn of abstract and realistic elements. Another artist that does this real well is James Jean.
