Marketing the Classics
Penguin Classics is doing some thinking. The novels referred to as “Classics” have more than earned the respect and love that people hold for them. But after such a very long time being out there in the world, how does a publisher get them re-noticed? Well, in the case of the newly released Penguin Classics Hardcover Classics, its about judging a book by it’s cover. And they are very nice covers at that.
They’re so nicely done, that they even caught my eye as I was hurrying towards the escalator from the top floor of Barnes & Noble (hence, the crappy above shot as I stopped short before stepping on).
Really well done- the color combinations, pattern work, and all hardcover (worth collecting the whole lot).

I’m just like you in that I now want them all- but you’re one step ahead of me. You have RECENTLY read some- I haven’t opened a “classic” since school days!
Hey- I really like your Blog! http://itsagoodhouse.blogspot.com
I saw them in Anthropologie and realized I wanted all of them!
But I also felt lame getting all these classic books without actually having read them. I found most of the electronic versions for FREE on ibook! I recently read Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre. Now I have it in my head to read all the Penguin Classics that are available in clothbound.
Anyway, sorry for rambling, but the books themselves are so good, it reminded me there is a reason they’re classics – and a reason beyond the cool covers to buy them!
