This particular show was last week at the Presbyterian church in town, but I do see them advertised throughout the year at various town halls, community centers, and churches. Admittedly, they're not the hippest of events, but pretty fantastic if you're interested in vintage textiles and handmade artistry.
Send a long a photo of one of your Gran's creations when you get a chance.

I just found an Upson Nut Co. folding ruler, marked "No56". It is only 3" long and folds out to 12". It was in a junk box someone was tossing out. Also found a little 4" Adjustable Wrench, marked Diamond Calk Horseshoe Co., Duluth, Minn Made In U.S.A. Diamalloy.

Taking the liberty to speak for all of these women, I say thank you, dear Andrew, for remembering us so beautifully on Mother's Day. Although I was then only the baby in the chain of generations pictured on the front stoop, I know for certain now that I was blessed to have been raised by all of these women. It's a trite phrase but I became what I am today because of them. Not to slight my grandfather and father, both nurturing and gentle folks too, but the day-to-day pushing and pulling was in the hands of these mothers.
Of course at that time I didn't realize my good fortune to have those generations in my life as most of my friends in their households had only parents, but my mother and I lived with her parents in their home. Mother worked, and apart from going to school and being with my friends, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, Nanny, whose full name was Mary Melissa Elizabeth Thomas Howard. It was she I told about my day at school as we sat in rocking chairs or in the swing on her front porch. It was Nanny who taught me how to play Jacks and introduced me to the rewards of knitting, sewing, growing flowers, cooking and to delicacies such as watermelon rind pickle, fresh buttermilk and lemon chess pie. Then I couldn't understand why she worried about me, how I behaved, what I said, but I'm grateful she did.

So recently when Laura, my daughter, your sister, returned from Chapel Hill with a photo of that same house, my childhood home and you then posted this sweet tribute, I again thanked these women for their wisdom, strength, and love (and abundance of patience!) they tried to pass along everyday. If they were here, they would recognize those qualities in you and your sister and be very happy.
Love,
Mom

great photos.

I often wonder what our 'vintage' photos will look like... probably end up on some thumb
drive in a box. Sometimes I wish "the old" was "new" but still old.
