Christmas in January | Live At Leeds
Back in November, I ordered myself a special Christmas present. I needed a little backup plan just in case I found a lump of coal in my stocking on Christmas morning. Well, I was lucky and unlucky- no coal in the stocking, but also no package in the mail before Christmas. But, lo and behold, in the midst of January’s snowstorms, iced over gutters, and the general darkness of January, Christmas came back for another go. The 40th anniversary edition of The Who | Live At Leeds arrived! The standard LP version was my first Who album and one of my first actual music purchases, so this little 40th anniversary baby was something I needed to own. For those who have been unlucky enough to know me since childhood, you know that this obsession of mine runs deep. My apologies go out to you all.
Commercials for Guys
Yes, we men are predictable creatures. You can sell us anything by playing to our weaknesses- Girls, Sports, and aspirational Coolness. With that said, it really is a wonder how Madison Avenue survived its heyday by putting out the cheese as demonstrated by the accompanying commercials. All things are relative though- I assume that people of the next generation will look back on 2011 and wonder what our marketers were thinking too.
Old Faithful Shop | Vancouver B.C.
I now have one more to add to my list of places to visit on my next trip out West (and a bit North to Vancouver, to be exact). I used to travel a couple times a year to Vancouver for work and really found it to be a great place. A perfect mix of art communities, fantastic eclectic restaurants, vintage shopping, and all nicely spread out in one of the cleanest and prettiest cities I’ve been in.
I happily stumbled upon The Old Faithful Shop recently via their shop’s blog called Old Chum. The blog for the most part supports the shop with photos of the owner’s latest finds and relevant local news.
Palm Springs ACE Hotel | I’m On My Way
Maybe it’s the two major snow falls over the last two weeks, or the remaining solid 12 inches of the lovely white stuff still in the yard, or the encasement of road salt on my car and its windows, or maybe it’s just that I’m looking for a little downtime in a warmer climate. Whatever my personal problems may be, the thought of spending a few days at the ACE Hotel in Palm Springs sounds alright to me.
One | A First Birthday
It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by already. A year ago today I posted my first article on The First Few. Not much of an article actually, but rather a test post dropped into WordPress to test the waters. Being new at the time to blog writing and the software that drove it, I needed to jump into the deep end of the blog pool to see if I could float. Thankfully, even with a few extra winter pounds put on, I was able to resurface after my initial leap of faith.
Life Of A Barn | Ohio Farmland
For someone who grew up on a 1/4 acre plot of land, the idea of someone having 500 acres at his disposal was a bit beyond my comprehension. When I first started visiting the nation’s farmland, I’d see these amazing old dilapidated barns just being left to collapse under their own weight. My thought was always to why the farmers would just leave them there and not bother repairing them. There would often be another much newer barn sitting close by already being used while the old one comes down at it’s own pace.
NYC Street Food | Food Trucks
I am one who loves what has affectionately become known as “street food”. Not necessarily the dirty-water dogs or the pretzels warmed over charcoal then sprayed with water and dredged in kosher salt. Although I guess there are times that could warrant such delicacies.
What I’m talking about is the ever-growing choices of absolutely delicious food being offered to us from the open bay windows of the many hundreds of food trucks right along the City’s streets. These trucks are everywhere in Midtown, all over Brooklyn and Queens, at thruway entrance ramps and underneath overpasses. Very guerrilla in their sales approach, but very effective and well worth your time.
Merry Christmas To All | Vintage Christmas Postage
With Jack Frost nipping at my nose and a few flurries falling from the Winter’s sky, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
Moleskine Cahiers | Ruled Journals
As the saying goes… Why buy a copy when you can get the original?
Moleskine legendary notebooks have been faithfully serving mankind over the last two centuries. The well known little black books have been found in the pockets and bags of some of history’s most luminous luminaries. Well, the black book’s close cousin- the Moleskine Cahier, is no slouch itself. They come in packs of three and in various sizes and colors. I happen to like the 5″ x 8.25″ in natural kraft cover. A little too big to easily fit into a standard back pocket, but no problem for jackets and bags. And hey, if you find yourself without any sizable pockets, don’t forget about those five-fingered things at the ends of your arms. They work great for holding notebooks and pens.
Cafe Du Monde | Chicory is Your Friend
While visiting my grandparents in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and having a moment to stroll through A Southern Season, I found what has become a mainstay to my morning coffee. Initially drawn to the coffee cans for their stand-out orange and maroon colored graphic, I quickly found that the product inside the can was far better than the outside. Lucky for me, the shopkeeper was brewing a fresh pot as I stood there holding the can and I was able to sample it right then and there.
